| Facts About The Builder's Licensing Process | |
Builder's license examinations are given electronically at test sites in Southfield, Grand Rapids and Lansing. The exam is given by Psychological Testing Services, Inc. (PSI) of Las Vegas, NV for the Michigan Department of Commerce. Call 1-800-733-9267 for an application and scheduling information for tests. Applications will be available at our Pre-License classes. You can also schedule online at http://www.psiexams.com/.
You may fax your application with credit card information to PSI at 818-247-3853 or call 800-733-9267 to make your application over the phone. There is a $15 charge for fax applications.
You must first pass both sections of the state test before you'll receive the license application. As of April 1, 2005, you will need 72% correct to pass the Business & Law section; 73% correct to pass the Trades section.
It costs $100 to take the exam for the first time. The cost of the license application is $95. This includes $40 for your first year's license, $15 to set up your file with the state, and $50 for the Construction Lien Recovery Fund -- a one-time charge. After this you'll need to keep up your license for $40 a year. ( $80 for two years)
A credit check is a required part of the process.
The test consists of 50 business and law questions and 100 practice/trade questions. Applicants have 150 minutes to complete the practice/trade section of the test.
If you miss one of our classes for any reason or wish to retake the class, you may do so as long as the class you want will be running. Please call us to verify you wish to retake the class. We will then inform the teacher that you will be attending. Please do not just show up! You may repeat all or part of the seminar within one year of taking our pre-license class. After that, you may purchase updates to your book from us at a nominal charge.
In some cases, there may be a book charge for one of our classes. This is due to the amount required by the community education program to host our classes.
If you wish to drop the class for any reason, you may do so only before the second session or first 4 hours. To receive a refund for a pre-license class, you also must return the book. There are no exceptions.
Please bring a hand-held non-programmable calculator to the class and a pen or pencil. Students are expected to study at least another 16 hours or more on their own following the class to fully prepare themselves for the exam. You have to study if you expect to pass.
Call PSI at 1-800-733-9267 for specific test sites and to schedule your exam. You can also schedule online at www.psiexams.com.
